Picking the Perfect Bathroom Paint Colour

Bathroom Elements with Benjamin Moore Paint samples

Benjamin Moore lists 452 Reds, 468 Oranges, 326 Yellows, 611 greens, 442 Blues and 211 Purples – that doesn’t even touch on the hundreds of white, grey and blacks available.  Picking THE perfect colour for your bathroom can seem daunting, especially when you are trying to do it from a 1”x 2” swatch in a store with florescent lighting. Even the most experienced designer couldn’t manage that so don’t feel you should be able to.

Given the endless options when choosing a paint color it is best to pick it last.  Realize that light will have a huge effect on how the color looks in your bathroom, but it is not the only element that will affect the end result.  Bathroom size, amount and type of light, tile colour, and vanity colour will also affect the paint colour.

Step-by-Step

1.        Choose all other elements in your bathroom

2.      Place all the elements (tiles, vanity sample, adjoining room  colors, etc.) in an area with lots of natural light.

3.      Introduce paint sample swatches – usually the right colour  will be obvious in either the harmony it creates or the contrast that makes the other elements work better together.

4.       Test the color by placing it on the wall in your room or better yet paint a sample patch on the wall and see how the light and color change, give yourself a few days.

Paint technology has improved significantly and even matte and eggshell bathroom paints are formulated to be resistant to mildew and are easy to clean with soap, water and a soft cloth, once the paint has had time to  cure.  Benjamin Moore’s ‘Aura Bath and Spa’ line is specific to bathroom applications.

Take your time and don't be intimidated when choosing your colour and remember your local paint store can be your best resource.
